Learn Japanese in a fun and supportive Slack community
Imagine learning Japanese, but not only by lessons, also by chatting with others, sharing funny posts, and even making new friends. Today, we want to introduce our Slack community and how we use it in our lessons!
Slack is a chat tool that most of you might already be familiar with. Many language schools use Google Classroom for communication between students and teachers. However, after much consideration, we decided to use Slack instead. Since we started, Slack has been our main tool for interactions between students and teachers.
One of the main reasons we use Slack is that many of our students are already using it at work and are familiar with how to use it. Even if someone never used Slack before, once they join the workspace, they can easily start chatting just like with other chat tools.
For one-on-one lessons, students and teachers communicate via DMs. For group lessons, there are private channels for each class where teachers announce homework or information about lessons. Sometimes, assignments need to be posted on Slack. For example, in one of our beginner classes, students were asked to write about their recent trip. They post their answers in the thread as homework. Some of them also share photos with their posts and both students and teachers enjoy reading them.
We also have open channels for everyone to use, besides the class channels. In the #random channel, both students and teachers share random fun things, book recommendations, photos from trips in Japan, recipes and everyday experiences. In the #work_in_japan channel, you can post if your company is hiring or if you are looking for a job. We are also planning to make more channels where you can practice Japanese or do other things using Slack!
And thanks to everyone, we have more and more original emojis. Since we are a Japanese language school, we will try to add more Japanese related emojis too!
Although our lessons are mainly given online, we are happy to hear from students who have got to connect on our Slack and even met in person! We are also planning to host more in-person events this year, be sure to check Slack for updates if you are a NP student!
It’s not only about lesson materials or how lessons should be conducted, we also want the tools we use to be as easy and fun as possible. That’s why we are constantly looking for ways to improve and make the learning experience better for everyone.
Please note: Slack messages are deleted after three months, for any important information, we use emails for official records.
